812. You remained on deck until your own junk was fired at. Is that correct? That is
so I had been working all the time on deck.
813. You have told us that you saw two guns on this submarine; where were they?
One on the bow and the other on the stern.
814. Did you see any marks on the submarine? Just below the middle on the hull of
the boat I saw a white line and then two dark lines.
815. Did they run the whole length of the hull or merely round the castle? The lines were first white, middle black and the third was white-these three lines went round the castle.
816. Did you see any flag? No, I could not see because it was so far away. 817. Had you any women or children on board your junk? Yes.
818. How many women? 10 women.
819. How many children? 2 children.
820. Did you at any time see the submarine stopping and rendering assistance to any of
your junks? No.
821. Where did the submarine go to when you last saw it? I cannot say that, for the reason that I went down into the hold. I was frightened and dared not come up for a long time.
822. How many men were you on board? 13.

823. Eleventh Witness. Lam Yung-shing, duly declared, states:-

825. Where were you born? At Shaukiwan.
826. In September of this year were you the owner of a junk? Yes.
827. What was the number of your junk? No. 28.
828. Where was it licensed? Licensed at Shaukiwan. It had been licensed for about 4
years-it was a new junk.
829. What do you reckon its value was in September of this year? It was a new boat
and it had only been built a few years.
830. Well, how much? Over $10,000.
831. You remember going on a fishing expedition in September? Yes.
831A.Where did you leave from? From Shaukiwan.
832. When did you leave there? We left on 18th of September and we went to
Chelong.
833. Were you accompanied by any other junk? No, but when we got to Chelong or
just before we got to it, we met other junks.
834. When you left Shaukiwan were you accompanied by your brother? Yes, quite
right.
835. Your younger brother's name is Lam Yung-hei? Yes.
836. Does he own a junk? Yes.
837. You know the number of his junk? I think it is No. 447.
838. Your junk and his junk left together from Shaukiwan on the 18th September?
Yes, quite correct.
839. Where did you go to first from Shaukiwan? We went straight to Chelong light-
house.
840. On what date did you arrive there? Evening of 21st September, we
Chelong lighthouse.
841. Could you see the light? Yes, we could see the light.

842. In the day time could you see the lighthouse? No, we could not see the lighthouse
in the day time.
843. How many other junks were there besides yours and your brother's? 10 other
junks.
844. Were they fishing in pairs? Yes.
845. When did you start fishing there? About 5 a.m.-it was about daybreak on the
22nd September.
846. Do you know the names of the owners of the next pair of junks to yours? The
owners of the nearest pair were Lam Fuk-tai and Shek Kai-cheung.
847. Do you remember the names of the owners of the pair of junks on the other side
of you? Lam Chu and Lam Shu-po. 848. Chairman: May we have an approximation of the distance of these pairs? 849. Mr. Whyatt: You told me they were fishing as a pair on one side of you.
you give me an idea of the distance away they were from your pair? Half way between Hong Kong and Kowloon, half way across the harbour.*

850. Can you in the same way tell me the distance between your pair of junks and Lam Shu-po and Lam Chu's pair of junks? A little further away from Hong Kong to Tsimshatsui.+
851. A little further away than Lam Fuk-tai's junk? Yes.
852. Whilst you were fishing that morning, did you notice anything unusual? I noticed nothing at first but after a little while a submarine was sailing from behind our junk, coming up from the stern.
853. What direction were your bows pointing? Facing south.
854. About what time did you notice this submarine coming up under your stern?
little after 8 a.m.

855. How far was it away when you first saw it? When I first saw this submarine
she was at a distance as far as from my junk to Lam Fuk-tai's junk.
856. Did you notice where it went to after you first saw it? That submarine turned
and fired at Lam Fuk-tai's pair.
857. Did you notice how many shots it fired at Lam Fuk-tai's pair? I did not quite notice how many shots were fired because at that time I had to look after my own boat.
I cut off the fishing ropes and tried to escape.
858. When you say you cut off the fishing ropes do you mean the ropes that were
attached to your fishing nets? Exactly.
859. Then what happened to the fishing nets? We looked after our lives and not the
nets they were abandoned.
860. And your younger brother did the same? Yes.
861. Having cut your nets adrift what did you do? We sailed in the direction of Hong
Kong, towards the west.
862. What did your brother's junk do? It did the same thing.
$63. Did you see anything more of the submarine? We sailed away but we noticed before sailing away that this submarine turned and chased Lam Chu and Lam Shu-po's junks and fired at them.
864. Did you see any sailors aboard this submarine? I was so far away I could not
see very distinctly.
865. After seeing the submarine approach Lam Shu-po and Lam Chu's junks, did you notice where it went after that? I do not know where the submarine went after it chased and fired at Lam Shu-po and Lam Chu's junks-I sailed away.
866. Where did you sail to? Straight back to Shaukiwan.
867. When did you arrive at Shaukiwan? Evening of 23rd September we arrived at
Shaukiwan.
* Half way across the harbour is a distance of about half a mile.
